Jim McConoughey got up close
and personal with the work done
by the Heart of Illinois United
Way when he and his wife Gina
co-chaired the organization’s
2009 Annual Campaign, during
which more than $8 million was
raised.
“It was a tremendous experi-
ence for both of us. It was during
the deepest part of the recession
yet people still came forward to
help others who were more in
need than they were. Peoria is a
generous community. It was very
rewarding,” McConoughey said.
That is why he has chosen the
Heart of Illinois United Way to
receive the $10,000 award from
The Peorian
should he be selected
winner of the inaugural The Peo-
rian of the Year Award.
The mission of the organiza-
tion is “to increase the organized
capacity of the people in Central
Illinois to care for one another.”
It does that by bringing
together business, labor, govern-
ment, health and human services
“to make a real difference in our
community,” the organization
says on its website,
www.hoiunitedway.org. It
collaborates with 45 partner
agencies to fund programs that
focus on issues affecting youth,
families, self-reliance and health
and it allocates funds to address a
broad range of community needs.
