OLD AND TIRED VETERANS
Finally, we were all aboard and
heading home. Some of us were
trying to sleep when we heard
someone yell out “mail call”.
Most of us laughed thinking it
was a joke. To a GI there is noth-
ing more sacred and important
than mail call. Letters from school
children and a few older folks
were handed out by calling our
names and the branch of service
we were in. Suddenly everything
got very quiet as each vet began
to open his very special mail. I
read every word of mine and I
wish I had space to tell you what
some of them said. It was at once
a highlight of the trip and yet a
touching, tear-jerking event for
all of us.
