Bike trail bridge is going up

If you drive up or down
Knoxville Avenue with
any regularity, you have
probably noticed the construction
going on just south of Junction
City and the intersection with
Prospect Road.
If you are wondering what is
being built, it is a bridge that will
carry the Pimeteoui Trail over
Knoxville so that cyclists, runners
and walkers can cross at the point
the Peoria Park District considers
the most dangerous intersection
along the trail.
A year ago we reported that
the Park District planned to build
a tunnel under Knoxville Avenue.
But those plans changed when a
thorough assessment of the land
found that all of the utilities to
the neighborhood were under-
ground, said Becky Fredrickson,
superintendent of the district’s
planning, design and construc-
tion division.
“Rather than moving the
utilities, we believed it would be
better for everybody to build a
bridge over Knoxville instead,”
Fredrickson said.
The bridge construction has
been hampered by the severe
winter weather, but Fredrickson
said it is expected to be com-
pleted by late spring or early
summer.
