Not For Profit
“
We are going more and more
into the school. We have a con-
tract with (Peoria School) District
150
and school children come
here and take our classes. We
even have classes for pre-school
kids. We know how important it
is that they learn early,” she said.
Hult Center, one of only 37
health education centers in the
country, recently underwent a
rebranding that enabled it to
expand programming to reach
more people and to improve its
volunteer programs. “We realize
how important volunteers are to
our organization, like they are to
any not-for-profit organization.
We need them because the de-
mands on staff are growing with
the popularity of our programs,”
she said.
Hult has 11 full-time staff and
three part-time, which is why
it relies heavily on interns and
volunteers.
After all, more than 6,600
people used Hult’s cancer pro-
grams and services in 2012 while
4,500-
plus participated in healthy
living programs, either outreach
classes or in-house classes. The
final numbers in 2013 will be
higher, Wright said.
The center has 66 different
programs. Its mission seems
simple: Teaching people of all
ages to respect and take better
care of themselves in order to live
stronger, healthier lives.
As programming grows,
Wright said it is difficult to pin-
point any as being more impor-
tant than others. “The growth in
our nutrition programming and
our cancer counseling services
has been tremendous. But we see
so many people and the impact
we have on them is vital, from the
smallest thing to the biggest. Just
giving a child a new toothbrush is
a big deal to them,” she said.
“
It is exciting and fun to know
we can make a difference in the
lives of so many people in the
community. We think our future
is very bright,” Wright said.
