An absolute lock for a Best
Picture nomination is the
visually spectacular
Gravity
starring Sandra Bullock and
George Clooney. Two astronauts
encounter a devastating accident
while repairing a satellite from
the space shuttle and fight to get
back safely to Earth. If you have
not seen this movie, it is most
certainly worthwhile to catch it
while it is still on the big screen
because the special effects are
out-of-this-world — even if the
story is rather linear.
We may hear some scuttle
about some early-year releases
like
Lee Daniel’s The Butler
,
Before
Midnight
, or the Woody Allen
film,
Blue Jasmine
, but to be
truthful all were fairly mediocre
films. Most certainly, I would
hope that Forest Whitacker grabs
a Best Actor nomination for his
work in
Lee Daniel’s The Butler.
The two dark horses in the
crowd are the new Coen Brothers
movie,
Inside Llewyn Davis
and
the indy dark comedy,
Nebraska
.
Really any film by the Coens
has a chance at sweeping the
Academy Awards.
Davis
tells the
story of a 1960s singer/songwriter
who moves to New York City and
must face its harsh winter and the
hurdles of making it in the music
business. The advanced reviews
are calling this film as good as
any in the Coen canon.
Nebraska
is about a father
(played by Bruce Dern) and
son (played by SNL actor Will
Forte) who take a road trip from
Montana to Nebraska to claim the
father’s million dollar prize, but
thematically settles around the
father/son relationship at the end
of the father’s life.
Too bad that Peter Jackson had
to muck up
The Hobbit
, otherwise
we would be talking about that
one as well.
I know I have given readers
a lot to see. There is a lot to be
thankful for in 2013, and the
multitude of films coming out
this Oscar season are definitely
one of them. If you were good
this year, maybe you should ask
Santa for a movie theater gift
card.
You are going to need it.
