“Certainly, there has to be a
plateau. There has to be. But ob-
viously we haven’t seen it yet and
with mobile becoming a bigger
and bigger part of e-commerce,
I think we’re still a long way off
from reaching that plateau,” she
said.
It was believed at one time that
as more and more states began
requiring or enforcing sales tax
collections on e-commerce that
online shopping would be at
least somewhat curtailed. “That
hasn’t happened, either. Surveys
showed that people considered
sales taxes to be only a small part
of the reason they would con-
sider giving up online shopping.
Those surveys showed that free
shipping was a more important
consideration for consumers,
that saving $10 or $15 in ship-
ping costs would trump concerns
about sales taxes,” Grannis said.
A few other tidbits from the National Retail Federation’s
consumer/retailer surveys show that:
•
Retailers are expected to hire between 720,000 and 780,000
seasonal workers this holiday season, in line with the 720,500
hired last year. That was a 13 percent increase from 2011.
•
41.2 percent of those surveyed said they intended to begin
holiday shopping before Halloween.
•
More people said they would use mobile devices and tablets
to do comparison shopping as well as finding retailers and
looking up store hours.
•
Gift cards remain popular as 59.4 percent of those surveyed
said they would most like to receive gift cards.
•
Of those surveyed, 35.6 percent said the most important factor
in deciding where to shop are sales and discounts.
