It’s not lazy slang to say “dystopian,” like, “Do you like dystopian or dat topian?”
(Or, “Hey! Are utopian me?”)
“Dystopian” is the opposite of “utopian.” Dystopia is a miserable setting like the movies “Mad Max,” “Children of Men” or “A Handmaid’s Tale,” and Nicholas Lamar Soutter’s 230-page 2012 novel is a dystopian book in the vein of “Fahrenheit 451,” “1984” and “Brave New World.”

Since we have just passed the halfway point in 2013 and I am the literary guy around here, now is the perfect time to share with you the books I’ve read thus far. As a hardcore lit nerd, there’s something satisfying about keeping track of the books you’ve read. I’ve been doing it now for five years and every time I look at one of my lists I think, “Good god, Kizer, you’ve GOT to get out more.” Anyway, here is my list of the books...

Over the past couple of years I’ve written dozens of book reviews for our magazine, website and now-defunct TV show. In fact, writing about other’s books is something I find quite easy (for better or worse). But writing about this particular book – “Wedlocked” by Jay Ponteri – I found to be a bit of a struggle.
It’s not because of the way the book is written. It’s written quite well. Ponteri is a seasoned writer and it...

Comedian Jerry Seinfeld will make his third stop in Peoria in five years when he appears at the Peoria Civic Center on Sept. 20, the Civic Center announced on Friday.
Seinfeld, who rose to fame as a stand-up comedian joking about the little things in life that affect everyone, became even better known because of his smash hit television show called "Seinfeld." He appeared in Peoria for two shows each in 2010 and 2008. Those shows played...

After two months of a sort of shake-down cruise, WIRL’s “Goodtime Oldies” format is experiencing smooth sailing.
“We've had excellent reaction to the format so far; lots of positive feedback,” says Lee Malcolm, the familiar voice that returned to Peoria airwaves on April 1 with “The Goodtime Morning Show” from 6 a.m.-noon weekdays.
“Most postings I've seen are in favor of the oldies format,” he continues. “I...

As the title of the show suggests, it was "Anything Goes" when it came to staging the next musical at Corn Stock Theatre's tent in Upper Bradley Park.
From an elaborate set to a wood floor in the pit to period costumes and wigs, Corn Stock made sure director Travis Olson and his cast of 36 people have been able to put on a top notch show for audiences that are already snatching up tickets for the nine-show run that begins at 7:30 p.m....

Editor's note: The Peoria got a couple press passes and sent a freelance writer, Julian Watkins, and our own Stu Clubb (and his camera) to the Summer Camp Music Festival to review the event. Here is their second installment.
As the headline suggests, weather did not dampen the fun at Summer Camp, but Mother Nature sure gave it a good shot. Scampers woke on Saturday to a steady rainfall that sent many festival...

(115 minutes, rated PG-13 for violence, language, adult situations and scenarios)
(1 star out of 10)
There is little doubt in many critics' opinion that Brad Pitt is an exceptional actor. I have watched the vast majority of his work, including his latest film, World War Z, and there is little argument he is a truly gifted artist.
I'm hoping maybe one day he will be able...

Perhaps the most famous fictional story about split personalities takes the stage at Eastlight Theatre on Friday in the form of "Jekyll & Hyde The Musical."
The musical, which expands on the well-known novella written by Robert Louis Stevenson and published in 1886, blends the horror and mystery of...
